I Am From…
By Jaime Lovello
I am from Friday night lights, crowds roaring, and touchdowns.
Mom putting a spread of food out for friends after games so that we were all safe.
I am from hot summer nights and all weekend of bats hitting the softball as the player screams “I have it!” and “Throw it to me!”
I am from Sundays at Sunday school and church
Grilled cheese and soup on Sunday night
And feet propped on the fireplace warming them on a cold Sunday day
And Dallas Cowboys on the TV.
I am from brownies on Labor Day, Mom’s potato salad every holiday.
I am from fried chicken, mashed potatoes, and gravy for my birthday.
I am from “Girls don’t call boys,”; “What you drag out you put up,”; “If you knew your school work like you do songs…”
I am from best friends from the age of two and friends always at the house
I am from the heartache of losing a best friend because of a drunk driver’s bad judgment.
I am from Jerianne teaching me to drive when I was too young (Mom and Dad didn’t know)
I am from Jon pinching me when we were little and becoming a best friend as we grew older.
I am my two cousins who were more of a sister and brother to me than cousins.
I am from fields of bluebonnets and Indian paintbrushes
Mesquite trees that are only good for barbecuing
I am from small town values & everybody knows you.
I am from dreams of leaving and dreams of returning only to visit.
I am also the mother of a beautiful 12 year old and the wife of a wonderful sexy man who I absolutely adore. (We are still newlyweds.)
I am the teacher of 25 children--somedays their mother.
I am a wannabe writer someday.
